Developing Sustainable Energy Solutions and Future Engineers

Dr. Shuya Wei is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM), where she leads research in electrochemical energy storage. Her work focuses on developing high-energy-density metal-based batteries, including the pioneering aluminum-CO2 battery, which integrates carbon capture and sustainable energy storage. She is also a co-founder of Flow Aluminum Inc., Albuquerque’s first battery manufacturing startup, advancing the commercialization of environmentally friendly battery technologies.

At UNM, Dr. Wei has built a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Her research on rechargeable aluminum-CO2 batteries has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications in ACS Applied Material & Interfaces and ACS Energy Letters. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, her aluminum-based battery technology avoids reliance on rare Earth materials, reduces fire risks, and offers greater energy storage capacity relative to weight. By combining aluminum and carbon dioxide, this innovation also doubles as a carbon capture solution, potentially reducing greenhouse gases while providing a cost-effective energy storage option.

She teaches core courses like Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, which explores how energy is transferred and transformed in chemical systems, and Advanced Transport Phenomena, which examines the movement of heat, fluids, and materials in industrial processes. These subjects are foundational to understanding and solving real-world engineering challenges. Her dedication to teaching is complemented by her efforts to mentor a group of students, fostering an environment where future leaders in clean energy technology can thrive. As a mentor, Dr. Wei has guided 14 undergraduate researchers, many of whom have pursued advanced studies, and actively supports graduate students through one-on-one and group mentoring sessions. She creates a collaborative learning environment that inspires students to explore bold ideas and achieve excellence.

Dr. Wei is a recipient of the ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement and ACS Petroleum Research Fund Doctoral New Investigator Awards. Dr. Wei is recognized for her contributions to advancing sustainable energy and mentoring the next generation of scientists and engineers. Her achievements, from innovations to mentorship, exemplify the qualities celebrated in Women in Technology honorees: innovation, leadership, and a dedication to empowering others in STEM.
