Leading quantum computing company Quantinuum expands in Albuquerque
The State of New Mexico and the City of Albuquerque are backing the expansion of Quantinuum, a leading quantum computing company, further establishing Albuquerque as a national hub in quantum technology and advanced research.
The city and state will each contribute $750,000 through their Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funds for a combined investment of $1.5 million to support Quantinuum’s new research and development hub in Albuquerque.
Tech company buys former Marble Brewery spaces downtown for $1.8M
Crumbacher, a locally owned and operated world class IT MSP, has purchased the former Marble Brewery office spaces downtown. Crumbacher continues to see consistent year-over-year growth, so the owners—John Crumbacher, Chris Crumbacher, and Ivan Shkirev—decided to purchase these buildings in downtown Albuquerque to ensure a central location, allowing them to keep up with the high demand for their services from businesses and organizations throughout the city.
As a values-based organization, Crumbacher finds it important to give back, invest in the community, and work to be a positive influence in New Mexico for New Mexicans and New Mexico businesses.

NMNWSE is now accepting nominations for the 2023 IMPACT! Award. The award will be presented at the fall NMNWSE Annual meeting dinner in October. Nominees and nominators will be notified as to the winner in plenty of time to schedule attendance. Nominations are due by Friday, September 8, 2023.

State awards over $7 million to support advanced energy sector
Nine advanced energy companies in New Mexico received a share of $7.5 million in New Mexico Advanced Energy Award grants designed to accelerate technology advancement and deployment and attract companies to the state.
The award, administered by Economic Development New Mexico’s (EDNM) Technology & Innovation Office (TIO), is in its third year and offers two classes of awards — Research and Development and Pilot Projects — to better support commercialization.

Sandia National Laboratories researchers have developed a microwave-based method to upcycle old lithium-ion cathodes
Instead of letting old lithium-ion batteries pile up as waste, Sandia National Laboratories researchers have developed a microwave-based process to recover and remake their cathodes. Lithium-ion batteries power everything from phones and electric vehicles to grid-scale energy storage and earbuds, but their cathodes are expensive to make and rely on minerals sourced from a limited number of countries, including lithium and cobalt.
Sandia’s new method does more than recycle those cathodes: It upcycles them, transforming spent battery material into new cathodes.
New Mexico Science and Technology Business Startup Grant Applications Now Open
Applications for The New Mexico Science & Technology (S&T) Business Startup grant are open now until July 7! This grant, made possible by the New Mexico Economic Development Department, is a competitive state-funded grant that supports small businesses engaged in research and development (R&D). The goal of this grant is to assist early-stage companies in commercializing a unique technology or product with strong growth potential and continuing to do business in New Mexico. These awards fund New Mexico-headquartered technology companies to support market entry, customer acquisition, business expansion, and job creation.
Projects may be awarded between $25,000 and $50,000.

The Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) has awarded the State of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories, and their partners with its State and Local Economic Development Award for building a quantum technology sector that has attracted five companies to the state in under two years.
The honor acknowledges the broad coalition’s work over the past two years to build the partnerships, programs, facilities and workforce needed to sustain a thriving in-state quantum sector.

Through this award, the New Mexico Economic Development Department ultimately seeks to support the growth or relocation of quantum technology companies in New Mexico to expand our economic base through business support and fostering the creation of new tech sector jobs.

Meet the First Cohort of CNM Ingenuity’s Quantum Technician Bootcamp
CNM and CNM Ingenuity are thrilled to announce that the inaugural cohort of learners began the Quantum Technician Bootcamp on Sept. 29. This is the nation’s first quantum technician job training program and learners will be trained to quickly meet industry demands in New Mexico and beyond.
The launch is also a key milestone in CNM’s partnership with Elevate Quantum, a consortium of 120 organizations in the Mountain West region working to dramatically accelerate the commercialization of quantum.

CyberUSA and NMTC Unite!
This July New Mexico Technology Council (NMTC) officially joined CyberUSA as its newest affiliate, expanding national cybersecurity collaboration into the Southwest. CyberUSA is a public-private network focused on improving cybersecurity readiness, innovation, and workforce development. NMTC’s membership will enhance the coalition with regional expertise and access to New Mexico’s vibrant tech community.
NMTC Executive Director Mia Petersen emphasized that the partnership will give local members access to national resources and strengthen New Mexico’s role in shaping the future of cybersecurity. CyberUSA’s Executive Director, Adam Rak, welcomed NMTC’s involvement, citing New Mexico’s strong tech leadership.

New Mexico is in a historic moment. With its unique combination of assets, resources, institutions, policies, and leadership, New Mexico is poised to launch a new era of growth and prosperity.
New Mexicans are fortunate to live in a state that is the 12th-largest sovereign oil producer in the world. At 2 million barrels per day, our state produces more oil than Mexico, Qatar, or Nigeria. Over the last 15 years, leaders in the Roundhouse and the State Investment Council have prudently amassed a $60 billion sovereign wealth fund, the second largest in the U.S. In the next several years, these assets will grow to over $100 billion from oil and gas revenues produced in the Permian Basin and investment returns.
Now is the time for thoughtfully invest our wealth to improve the quality of life for our residents, grow the economy and create opportunities for all New Mexicans to prosper. It has become critically important for our Governor and Legislature to seize this moment for economic development with a long-term vision and bold action.
The 2025 legislative session showed movement in this direction, evidenced by two bills introduced by Representative Small and Representative Dixon, and signed by Governor Lujan Grisham earlier this month. House Bill 20 makes an important investment in the future of our state by providing $100 million for research, development, and deployment funds to provide early-stage capital and support to emerging technologies, startup businesses, and research initiatives. These funds will nurture innovation and create opportunities for New Mexicans.
The House Appropriations Finance Committee appropriated hundreds of millions for needed infrastructure investment in our economy in House Bill 2. This is a welcome change of approach from years past when small, incremental funding was the norm. This investment will help New Mexico catch up to and possibly outpace our neighbors and competitors in the region who are also investing hundreds of millions in innovation and infrastructure. Our legislators are now thinking big and taking the necessary action.
I have studied the New Mexico economy, engaged with hundreds of stakeholders across the state with a focus on high-growth startups. Climate tech, advanced energy, bioscience, aerospace, quantum computing and intelligent manufacturing are important, high-growth sectors where New Mexico excels. These are the industries targeted for investment by the New Mexico Economic Development Department to diversify the economy.
There is also a vibrant startup scene in New Mexico that has grown significantly since 2019 when $5 million of venture capital flowed to about 10 startups. By comparison, from 2019 to mid-2024, a total of $550 million in capital has been invested in 130 companies. The State Investment Council has committed $780 Million to 23 venture capital firms to invest in New Mexico with the aim to diversify and growth the economy. The impact of these investments will pay off in the ensuing years and decades.
While the availability of capital has increased, local early stage companies still face challenges finding local funding, talent and required infrastructure. Many in the startup ecosystem are manufacturing a device, material or machine. They require space, equipment and talent to prototype, design and perfect their products and processes.
One way to address the challenges is with programs like the New Mexico Innovation Hub (NMIH), an infrastructure project designed to support the manufacturing phase of growth for companies coming out of incubators. The 82-acre NMIH campus, located at the Albuquerque International Sunport, provides a prototyping lab, manufacturing facilities, workspaces, conference rooms, amenities and a secure area for classified work called a SCIF, a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility.
In addition, workforce training is central to the NMIH mission to develop talent for these growing industries. The New Mexico Innovation Hub provides the missing center of gravity in our ecosystem and a magnet to attract innovators from around the world.
