From Robotics to Quantum: A Journey of Guidance and Innovation
Bethany Cannon’s journey in tech is rooted in hands-on innovation, mentorship, and a commitment to breaking barriers. As a Technical Business Development Specialist at AKIMA, supporting Sandia National Labs, Bethany contributes to strategic initiatives and planning in microelectronics and quantum technologies while fostering workforce development.
Bethany’s passion for technology began with her involvement in the R4 Creating Robotics Team, where she held leadership roles, including President of Business, and served as one of the few female robot drivers. Inspired to encourage other young women to pursue engineering, she founded New Mexico’s first all-girls VEX robotics team. In their first year, the team qualified for the VEX Worlds competition, the largest robotics event globally. They later earned the Inspire Award in 2019, celebrating their dedication and professionalism.
Her time at New Mexico Tech further amplified her drive to empower others. She played a key role in revitalizing the university’s Makerspace, a collaborative environment equipped with 3D printers, drones, and laser engravers, where students could transform ideas into tangible innovations. Bethany not only managed the space but also hired and mentored women, helping them navigate their STEM journeys with confidence.
At Sandia, Bethany has continued to champion education and mentorship. She helped to plan and execute the Quantum Computing, Mathematics, and Physics Camp (QCaMP), expanding its reach to include students from underserved communities and increasing teacher participation nationwide. The program saw exponential growth under her and the team’s efforts, earning praise from a Sandia Associate Lab Director who remarked, “Your ability to bring quantum to new communities through creativity and partnerships is unmatched and sincerely appreciated.”
Bethany also collaborates on workforce initiatives like the Student Intern Group for Microelectronics Advancement (SIGMA), equipping students with the skills to excel in high-demand technical fields. A former mentee reflected, “Bethany’s dedication to empowering others is extraordinary. She leads by example, pushing me to excel while offering unwavering support. She is shaping the next generation of innovators with her thoughtful and inclusive approach.”
Through her leadership in STEM programs and her commitment to mentoring others, Bethany is driving meaningful change. Her dedication to fostering innovation and inclusion represents the qualities celebrated by the Emerging Leader Award.
